When you’re washing your hands, take off any jewellery and get the soap or an antiseptic solution ready, following the instructions on the bottle.

It should take a couple of minutes to clean and rinse your hands under flowing water

You should wash your hands thoroughly under flowing warm water and rub all areas of the skin thoroughly, remembering the thumbs, fingertips and backs of hands.

You don’t need to use a mini-scrubbing brush as vets do before surgery, but you must to be thorough. It should take about a couple of minutes to clean and rinse your hands under flowing water.

Dry your hands with a paper towel or a rotating towel if these are available. Do not use a towel which has been used previously as that may be contaminated.

Regular cleaning with antibacterial household cleaners will help to reduce bacteria on the floors and other surfaces in the house. In addition, frequent and thorough hand washing, and prompt disposal of dirty bandages are important.

While your pets are infected, it can help to keep them confined to areas in the house that are easy to clean, e.g. utility room, tiled hallways, rather than carpeted rooms.
